Hydration and your Brain
"These pains you feel are messengers, listen to them"
Rumi
Science, as with all things in life, there is good science (controlled by the right people) and bad science (controlled by the wrong people).
Bad science:
A commonly sited example of profits before health is Uncle Toby's Cheerios which has the Australian National Heart Foundation tick of approval. Most people assume that because the National Heart Foundation approve such items, then it must be healthy or in the least safe to eat.
Whole grains (68%), Wheat (33%), Corn (25%), Oats (5%), Rice (5%)], Wheat Starch, Sugar, Golden Syrup, Sunflower Oil, Salt Blend [Salt, Mineral Sea Salts (508, 511)], Colors (Caramel and Annatto), Acidity Regulator (Trisodium Phosphate).
It may not be the best food option to consume these regularly. Products filled with sugar and numbers are obviously not ideal foods to eat, however this is just an example of 'bad science' combined with marketing aimed at sales and not long term health.
Good science:
Advancements in computerized brain volumetric (size) measurements. What does this mean? Basically, we can measure how hydrated your brain is through the use of brain scans and use average daily values to understand more about neurological disease (migraine).
What this demonstrates is commonalities and early warning signs. These early warning signs have potential value for diagnosis and the follow-up evaluation and progression of degenerative disorders.
Remember a key attribute to migraine is chronic dehydration, coupled with low mineral levels in your body.
The authors of this linked article show that dehydration and re-hydration can significantly change brain volume: lack of fluid intake for 16 hours decreased brain volume by 0.55% (SD, ±0.69), and after re-hydration total cerebral volume increased by 0.72% (SD, ±0.21).
Regarding our health, our attitude often fails us, we fail to look beyond the oncoming horizon, we often lose our way by thinking and living too much in the moment.
Every single action we do each day should take the aim of improving ourselves mentally and physically for the marathon of life.
